Miltimore family papers, 1838-1963.

Correspondence, account books, newsclippings, etc., including letters between Ira Miltimore of Chicago (Ill.) and his wife-to-be, Margaret B. King of Port Byron (N.Y.), 1838-1839; sundry family documents, genealogy, and clippings 1842-1971; Civil War letters of Ira Miltimore (2 items, 1863) and his son Claron Miltimore (2 items, 1864); Mrs. Miltimore's account books, 1881-1894; and a book with pasted notes: The Life of James A. Garfield, 1880. The family resided in Chicago (Ill.), Janesville (Wis.), and Mitchell (Dakota Territory). Topics include religion and social and economic conditions in Chicago in the 1830s. Claron Miltimore's 1864 letters from near Petersburg (Va.), where he served as an officer of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry 37th Regiment, describe men within arm's reach being killed by rifle shots, "The chances of life here are woefully against a man" (June 26), and "Grant and Lee are building a mighty slaughter" (July 12). Also includes sketch of his corps's badge. One account book published by the Emmert Proprietary Company, Chicago, includes helpful hints and advertisements for Eilert's patent medicines, 1890s.
